Governor Gavin Newsom recently unveiled a revised state budget proposal aimed at eliminating a massive deficit by mid-2028, while also committing $540 million to California infrastructure projects.
While the governor navigates fiscal constraints, analysts remain focused on his political maneuvers. On Pod Save America, David Axelrod credited Gavin Newsom for having "shown a, a lot more serious political chops than I, uh, would have expected when he first ran for office." However, the consensus is far from uniform. Jon Favreau took a sharper tone, noting that "Gavin Newsom's breathing down her neck."
Housing remains the governor's most contentious policy battleground. On The Ezra Klein Show, Ezra Klein highlighted that Gavin Newsom has "threatened lawsuits against 15 more cities and counties for dragging their feet or opposing state housing law." Yet, local leaders like Matt Mahan maintain that he has "been a champion for housing and... bolder on housing than, than other, um, past governors."
Elsewhere, Kara Swisher on Pivot offered a rare unqualified win, stating that "Newsom got the job done in California. He, like, hit them hard and won redistricting." As he continues to balance national ambitions with aggressive state-level enforcement, the friction between his policy mandates and local resistance will likely define his remaining term.
