Montreal police have opened an investigation into a May 1 labor protest where demonstrators used a guillotine to decapitate a papier-mâché effigy of the province's labor minister. While the city's streets were filled with the sound of Pouzza Fest punk rock and the start of the Piknic Électronik season, the political optics of the guillotine incident have drawn sharp attention.
On The Joe Rogan Experience, Joe Rogan questioned the city's future, asking, "What do you think happens in the future to Concordia and just to Montreal in general with this influx of people?" His guest, Gad Saad, kept his comments personal, merely noting his own history of relocating to the city: "No, no, no, in, in Montreal."
Elsewhere, the city remains a standard stop for touring acts. Ari Shaffir recounted a recent storytelling event on Your Mom's House, telling hosts Tom Segura and Christina P., "So we were in Montreal. We were doing one, and ugh, that's the one, just, just straight act. And then s- afterwards he was like, 'That was so fun. Thanks, man.' I'm like, 'You ruined it.'"
Meanwhile, Dave Ramsey on The Ramsey Show focused on the financial health of local residents, praising a caller named Emily: "Emily's in, uh, Montreal. Hi, Emily. How are you?" As the Montreal Asian Film Festival continues its run through June, the city balances its reputation as a cultural hub against a backdrop of increasingly volatile public protests.
